gctsafetyGold Coast Transit (GCT), the largest public transportation provider in Ventura County, celebrated the recipients of its 2010 Safety Awards at its annual safety awards breakfast on Monday, September 20, 2010.

Gold Coast Transit honored eighty-four members of its operations and maintenance team for outstanding records of safety this past year. GCT also celebrated two new inductees, Bus Operators John Fine and Alma Cuanas, to its Million Mile Club.

Members of the Million Mile Club have driven over 1 million miles while working for Gold Coast Transit without involvement in a preventable accident. Driving from Los Angeles to New York City 360 times is the equivalent of driving 1 million miles. To cover this distance at an average speed of 35 miles per hour, it would take over 28,500 hours of driving.

“Becoming a member of the Million Mile Club is quite an amazing achievement,” said General Manager Deborah Linehan. “To accumulate a million miles of safe driving, it takes a bus operator over thirteen years of full time work without any incidents.”

Gold Coast Transit currently has ten bus operators in the Million Mile Club and two bus operators, Shelly Richards and Deborah Thacker, in the Two Million Mile Club.

“Bus safety is of vital importance to every member of our community, whether or not they use public transit. We all share the road with Gold Coast Transit buses and we are proud to offer a sense of safety and security to our community,” stated Supervisor John C. Zaragoza, Chairman of GCT’s Board of Directors.

Annually, GCT's fleet of 54 natural gas powered buses carry over 3.5 million passengers on 19 bus routes. The 91 square mile service area of Gold Coast Transit lies within the Cities of Oxnard, Ventura, Port Hueneme and Ojai and the unincorporated County areas between these cities. GCT is a joint powers authority governed by a Board of Directors made up of an elected official from each member jurisdiction.
