April 5, 2010 – Ventura County’s transit operators are promoting cleaner air with the County’s biggest ever bus ridership promotion. Starting April 5 more than 15,000 free bus tickets will be given out to encourage people county-wide to rethink their ride.  One of the easiest ways an individual can make an impact this Earth Day is by riding public transportation.  Switching from driving a car to riding the bus is significantly more beneficial to the environment than then typical energy-saving activities practiced at home.

The Ventura County Air Pollution Control District (VCAPCD) is funding the free bus ticket promotion.  The free bus tickets will be valid for use from Saturday, April 10 through Monday, May 10, 2010 on the following services: VISTA, Gold Coast Transit, Camarillo Area Transit, Thousand Oaks Transit, Simi Valley Transit, and Moorpark City Transit.

If a Ventura County resident switches from driving a 20-mile roundtrip commute to riding the bus, their annual CO2 emissions will decrease by 4,800 pounds per year, equal to a 10 percent reduction in a two-car household’s carbon footprint.  Public transportation use also saves the U.S. the equivalent of 4.2 billion gallons of gasoline annually — and more than 11 million gallons of gasoline per day.  Better yet, Gold Coast Transit, the County’s largest transit provider, doesn’t use gasoline or diesel to run its 50 buses.  The entire fleet is powered by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), which runs cleaner and is less expensive than buses fueled by gasoline or diesel.

“Gold Coast Transit’s CNG powered bus fleet has been helping to reduce Ventura County’s carbon footprint for more than 15 years”, commented Deborah Linehan, Gold Coast Transit’s General Manager.  “We are committed to keeping Ventura County a beautiful and environmentally-friendly place to live, work, and play.”

The free bus tickets will be distributed at local Ventura County Earth Day events and by request, on a first come, first served basis.  To request a free bus ticket, Ventura County residents can call (800) 438-1112 or fill out a request form at www.TryTransitVenturaCounty.org.  To learn more about local public transportation in your area, visit www.TryTransitVenturaCounty.org or www.GoVentura.org.
