Gold Coast Transit Seeks Public Comment on Proposed Transit Fare Increase
November 9, 2009
Due to the impact of the prolonged economic recession and resulting lower revenues, Gold Coast Transit (GCT) is proposing to increase its bus and paratransit fares for the first time since 2003. If approved by the GCT Board of Directors, the fare increase recommended by agency staff would be implemented in two phases in 2010 and 2011.
If implemented, the current adult bus fare of $1.25 would increase by 10-cents in January 2010 to $1.35 and by
15-cents in July 2011 to $1.50. Fares for a trip on GCT’s ACCESS paratransit service for people with disabilities
and senior citizens 65 and older would increase to $2.70 in 2010 and $3.00 in 2011.
The proposed fare increase would address diminishing revenues from state and local sources which account for
80 percent of GCT’s overall budget. In the past year, available state transit funding was slashed and several GCT
member cities have had to cut their share of funding for GCT transit service.
The GCT Board of Directors and staff are soliciting public comment on the proposed fare increase. A public
meeting will be held on Wednesday, November 18, 2009 from 5 to 7 PM in the Board Meeting Room at Gold
Coast Transit, 301 E. Third Street (corner of Third Street and Garfield Avenue), Oxnard, California 93030-6048.
At the public meeting GCT staff will provide information on the need for the proposed fare increase and invite
detailed public comments in both English and Spanish from those attending. This input will be considered by the
GCT Board of Directors before action is taken.
Information will also be available regarding the cost savings per ride to passengers who purchase multi-ride
tickets and passes.
In addition to seeking public input at the public meeting, GCT invites interested parties to submit input through:
- Phone: 805- 483-3959, ext. 100
- Mail: GCT Planning Department, 301 E. Third St., Oxnard CA 93030-6048
- Fax: 805-487-0925
The GCT Board of Directors will provide additional opportunity to comment and provide input at a public hearing
on the proposed fare increase on December 2, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at 301 E. Third Street, Oxnard, CA 93030.
All written, oral and emailed input will be considered by the GCT Board of Directors before it takes action directly
following the close of the public hearing.
